QR Code Koozies: How to Put a Scannable Code on a Can Cooler (and What to Link It To)

You can put a scannable QR code on a custom koozie, and it costs nothing extra. Our online design tool makes the code for you: paste a link, tap Add QR, and the code lands on the mockup. It prints as black squares on a white square, so it keeps its contrast on any koozie color, dark ones included. Most people put the logo on the front and the QR code on the back, and two-sided printing is included on every style except magnetic.

How to add a QR code in the design tool

  1. Open any design page, for example Design Your Koozie, and pick a style and color.
  2. Find the QR code box under the design tools. It is there on every tab.
  3. Paste the full link, including https://, and tap Add QR. The code appears on the mockup right away.
  4. Drag it where you want it. Pull a corner handle to make it bigger. On every style except magnetic, the Front and Back buttons above the mockup let you put it on the back side.
  5. Point your phone camera at the mockup on your screen. If the right page opens, the link in the code is correct.

The code is generated from the exact link you paste, so check the link for typos before you order. You will see the code again on the mockup we email you, and that is a good moment to scan it one more time.

What to link to

  • Bars, breweries and restaurants: your menu, your Google reviews page, a loyalty sign-up, your Instagram, or the page for your next event.
  • Weddings: the wedding website, the RSVP form, a shared photo album where guests upload their pictures, or the reception playlist.
  • Fundraisers and nonprofits: the donation page. A koozie at a golf tournament or a 5K gets scanned all day.
  • Businesses and trade shows: your website, a booking or quote page, or a short video.
  • Family reunions and parties: a group chat invite, a photo album, or a map of the weekend.

Make sure it scans

  • Size. Make the code at least about 1 inch square on the finished koozie. The default size in the tool is small, so pull a corner handle to enlarge it. Bigger is easier to scan from across a table.
  • Keep it square. Resize from a corner handle so the code is not stretched into a rectangle. A stretched code may not scan.
  • Leave the white margin alone. The white square around the code is part of how a scanner finds it. Do not place text or art on top of it.
  • Use a short link. A long link makes a code with more, smaller squares. A short link makes a simpler code that scans at a smaller size. Most link shorteners are free.
  • Test on screen first. Scan the mockup on your phone and on a second phone if you can. The on-screen test confirms the link. Size and the clear white margin are what make the printed code scan, so keep both generous.

Can I change the link after the koozies are printed?

Not on the koozie itself. The printed code always points to the exact link you pasted. If the destination might change, for example a menu that moves to a new page, paste a link you control instead. Use a short link from a shortener service with an editable destination, or a redirect on your own domain. Either one lets you send the same code somewhere new later. Set that up before you design the koozie.

Using your own QR code image

If you already have a QR code from another generator, you can upload it as a picture instead. Export it as a PNG at least 1,000 pixels wide with a white margin around it, then add it through the Upload tab. If you want it in a color other than black, make it dark enough to stand out from its white background. A pale code on white may not scan. For most people it is simpler to paste the link and let the tool make the code.

Where to put it

On the regular, slim, 16 oz, pattern and ombre styles, put your logo or design on the front and the QR code on the back. Both sides are included in the price. The two magnetic styles print on one side only, so place the code beside the logo and keep the logo a little smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Does a QR code cost extra on a custom koozie?

No. The code is part of your design, and two-sided full-color printing is included at the listed price on every style except magnetic.

Will a QR code work on a black koozie?

Yes. The tool prints the code as black squares on a white square. The contrast is the same on a black koozie as on a white one.

How big does a QR code need to be on a koozie?

About 1 inch square is a good minimum for a short link. Make it larger if your link is long or if people will scan it from a distance.

Can I change where the QR code goes after printing?

Only if you used a link you can redirect, such as a shortener with an editable destination or a redirect on your own website. A code made from a plain page link always opens that page.

Can I use a QR code I made somewhere else?

Yes. Upload it as a PNG of at least 1,000 pixels with a white margin, through the Upload tab on the design page.
