What is DTF printing?

Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is a modern printing technique primarily used for transferring designs onto fabrics, especially apparel. Unlike traditional methods, DTF allows for vibrant, durable designs on various materials, making it a popular choice in custom apparel production.

Key Aspects of DTF Printing

  1. Process

    • Printing on Film: The DTF process starts by printing a design onto a special PET (polyethylene terephthalate) film, not directly onto fabric.
    • White Ink Base Layer: A layer of white ink is printed as a base over the design, which ensures colors remain vibrant on darker fabrics.
    • Powder Adhesive: The printed film is then coated with a powder adhesive, which, when heated, creates a binding layer that adheres well to fabric.
    • Heat Transfer: The prepared film is heat-pressed onto the fabric, causing the adhesive to melt and permanently bond the ink to the garment.

  2. Materials

    • Versatile Fabrics: DTF can be applied to a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, blends, leather, and even some types of synthetic materials.
    • Vibrant Colors: DTF printing produces rich, full-color designs, and can handle complex patterns, gradients, and intricate details.

  3. Advantages

    • Durability: DTF prints have high durability, often withstanding many washes without cracking or fading.
    • Versatility: Unlike Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing, which works best on cotton, DTF prints can adhere to both natural and synthetic fabrics.
    • No Pre-Treatment Needed: Unlike some techniques that require prepping the garment, DTF doesn’t need special pre-treatment, speeding up production time.

    • DTF printing is widely used in custom apparel production, sports, koozies©, jerseys, and accessories. It’s especially popular in small-scale or on-demand printing businesses due to its flexibility, ease of setup.
